EMERGENCY BOX

In cooperation with AllBox, a Belgian cardboard manufacturer, we were challenged by 'Doctors Without Borders' to create an innovative cardboard box. To transport medicines and medical equipment, Doctors Without Borders uses a standard cardboard box with fixed dimensions (60X60X40). The problem with this box is that, after transport it has become completely useless and is being discarded.

Our challenge was to give the box a second purpose after delivery. We were asked to come up with an innovative, sustainable concept which could provide the box with capabilities beyond that of ordinary transport. This had to be done in the context of the work environment often experienced on locations where Doctors Without Borders is active, i.e. places where goods and services are harder to be found.

I came up with a simple design that transformed the ordinary cardboard box into a storage shelf. When the box is delivered, the doctor or voluntary simply has to slide off the outer protective shell and is presented with the necessary goods and equipment, all stored in an orderly fashion.

This was an individual project completed over the course of 6 weeks. At the final presentation members of both Allbox and Doctors Without Borders were judging, along our teachers. My design was picked by Allbox to be tested and produced.
